A transformation challenge run on a clipboard dies in week three: someone loses the starting weights, two people argue about who actually won, and the prize gets handed out on vibes. This runs off InBody scan data your members are already generating. You configure the competition in the portal, members opt in from their phone, the standings compute themselves, and the winners get their points on the closing date without anyone tallying anything.
01 — How it works
Configure it once, then leave it alone
- Joining is opt-in, and it snapshots a baselineA member enters from the app or the member site, and the moment they do, their current scan is frozen as their starting point. Progress is measured from the day they joined — not from a scan they took eight months ago and forgot about. Nobody is entered for them.
- Six ways to score itCombined score, fat-loss percentage, muscle gain in pounds, weight-loss percentage, scan count, or InBody composition score. Scan count is the sleeper: a challenge that rewards showing up and scanning gets the whole roster onto the machine, which is the data you wanted anyway.
- Age and gender multipliers, configurableRaw percentage lost is not a fair fight across a mixed field, and everybody in your store knows it — which is why the same three people win every time and the rest stop entering. Multipliers are yours to set, so a 52-year-old can beat a 24-year-old on effort.
- It closes itself and pays outOn the end date the challenge closes, standings freeze, winners are recorded, and prize points land on their accounts. The award is idempotent: the job can run twice and nobody gets paid twice.
- The panel hides when there is nothing runningA store with no active challenge shows members no challenge tab at all. No empty-state screen advertising a competition that does not exist, no support question about the button that does nothing.
02 — Where this came from
A quarterly leaderboard that already works, generalized
The founding store has run a rolling quarterly body composition leaderboard for a while — it is one of the few retention mechanics there that people ask about unprompted, because a member who is on a leaderboard comes in to scan, and a member who comes in to scan buys something. What this feature does is take that one hard-coded quarterly contest and make it a thing you configure: any start date, any end date, any metric, as many as you want at once. Six-week summer cut, a January challenge, a per-location contest between two stores, a scan-count sprint for a slow month.
The older quarterly leaderboard is untouched and still runs alongside, so nothing that already worked got traded away for the new thing. Both read the same InBody scan ingest, and prizes pay out in the same currency as everything else — points in the loyalty engine, redeemable against your real rewards catalog, not a gift card you have to go buy.
One honest limit: the engine scores what the scanner gives it. A member who joins and never scans again finishes at zero, and a challenge run at a store where nobody scans will be a leaderboard of one person. The mechanic that makes this work is the same one that makes counter check-in work — you have to give people a reason to touch the machine on the way in. Announce the challenge by text to the segment that has scanned before, and the rest takes care of itself.

How do members join a challenge?
They opt in themselves, from the member app or the member site. Joining snapshots their current scan as the baseline, so progress is measured from the day they entered rather than from whatever their oldest scan happened to say. Nobody is entered automatically.
How is the winner decided?
You pick the metric when you build the challenge: a combined score, fat-loss percentage, muscle gain in pounds, weight-loss percentage, scan count, or InBody composition score. Age and gender multipliers are configurable on top, so a 52-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man can compete in the same field without the result being decided by physiology.
What happens when a challenge ends?
It closes itself on the end date, freezes the standings, records the winners, and awards the prize points to their accounts. The award is idempotent — the job can run again and nobody gets paid twice.
Do I need an InBody scanner for this?
Yes — the challenge engine scores real scan data, so scans have to be arriving. Scans can reach the platform by LookinBody webhook or by photo upload and parse, which is the path that works with any scanner brand and no subscription. Both are explained on the InBody integration page.
