Compare
vs Homebase
Homebase is the default answer for small hourly teams, and for good reason: it is free for one small location, it hires for you, it runs payroll, and there is a human HR advisor on the phone at the top tier. We do none of those four things. What we do is hold the entire store — the rota, the clock, the payroll workbook, the signed documents, the counter quoting, the inventory logs — on one platform instead of four.
01 — Side by side
The honest table.
| Category | Eco Systems | Homebase |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The whole store's operating system — rota, time clock, payroll workbook, HR documents, write-ups, inspections, counter quoting, returns and stamp logs, plus the loyalty/CRM side on retail tenants | An all-in-one team-management product for small hourly businesses: scheduling, time clock, hiring, payroll, HR and compliance |
| Free tier | None. There is a setup and migration step with a human in it | Better. Basic is free for one location, up to ten employees — scheduling, time tracking, messaging, hiring |
| Pricing model | Quoted per site and headcount. No feature tiers, nothing locked behind an upgrade, no contract | Published per-location plans — Basic free, then Essentials, Plus and All-in-One at increasing monthly prices per location, ~20% off billed annually. HR and compliance live in the top tier |
| Hiring | A simple candidate pipeline with a convert-to-employee step. No job-board posting | Better. Posts to Indeed, ZipRecruiter and Google, AI applicant screening, digital I-9 and W-4 before day one |
| Payroll | Builds the workbook, doesn't file it — a real .xlsx with a section per store entity, hours and OT from punches, leave columns, loans, mileage, deductions, new-hire section, changed rows highlighted | Better if you want filing. Payroll add-on that actually pays and files: monthly base fee plus a per-employee-paid fee |
| HR advice | None. We build the forms; we are not your HR advisor | Better. Top tier includes labor-compliance alerts, a policy template library, a handbook builder and a live HR advisor by phone |
| Employee app | Phone web app, installs to the home screen, web push — today's shift, confirm, chat, documents to sign, set your own PIN, ideas box | Better. Mature native iOS and Android apps |
| Time clock | The store's own tablet, claimed once with a store code; every punch starts with the employee's 4-digit PIN. Manager fixes logged with who and when | Mobile or tablet clock with PIN, photo and GPS geofencing |
| Multi-store scoping | One roster across every store. Employees belong to a home store plus any others; managers and GMs are scoped to a set of stores, and per-area permissions can be revoked one at a time — the tab disappears and the API refuses | Multi-location supported above the free tier, with departments and permissions from the Plus tier up |
| Several legal entities | Assumed, not bolted on. The payroll workbook sections by entity, and a salaried person can be salaried at one store and hourly at another | Worth asking them directly how one roster maps across several EINs before you commit |
| Everything that isn't workforce | Counter quoting with photos and customer signature, returns cartons with scanning and export, stamp inventory logs with owner-only margin, recurring inspections, write-ups on your own paper form, plus loyalty, SMS and a check-in kiosk on retail tenants | Out of scope by design — Homebase is a workforce and HR product |
| Does it get changed for you | Yes — surfaces are built to match the paper forms you already use, and owner requests ship as product changes | Configuration within the product, for a very large small-business customer base |

02 — Fair is fair
Where Homebase is simply better
Four things, and none of them are close. First, the free plan: one location, ten employees, scheduling and a clock and messaging, for nothing. We cannot beat free and we are not going to pretend the comparison is subtle. Second, hiring — posting the role to Indeed and ZipRecruiter, screening applicants, collecting an I-9 and a W-4 before the first shift. Ours is a candidate list you move along a pipeline; theirs is a hiring product. Third, payroll that actually files and pays. Fourth, a real HR advisor on the phone when a state law changes or you are about to terminate someone; that is worth money and we do not sell it.
Their native apps are better than our web app, their onboarding is self-serve, and if your business is one or two locations with hourly staff and ordinary needs, Homebase is a genuinely excellent answer. Take the free tier, upgrade when it pinches, and skip the rest of this page.
03 — Where we win
Homebase manages your team. It doesn't run your counter.
Homebase is excellent at the employee. It has nothing to say about the other half of a store's day: the customer standing at the counter asking what it costs to box and ship an odd-shaped item, the cartons of returns that need scanning and reconciling, the stamp inventory someone counts into a notebook at open and close, the recurring checklist a district manager is supposed to walk. Those are not HR problems, so an HR product does not solve them — and an owner ends up with Homebase plus a quoting calculator plus a notebook plus a spreadsheet plus, if they sell to repeat customers, a separate loyalty vendor.
Eco Systems is one platform for all of it. The same roster that drives the rota drives the PIN that opens a counter quote. The same stores list scopes the schedule, the timesheets, the quotes, the stamp log and the write-ups, so a manager given two stores has two stores everywhere at once. The same documents engine that holds the handbook holds the wet-signature forms that have to be printed and scanned back, and the uploads you need on file with an expiry date. And on retail tenants the customer side — points, segments, texts — lives in the same login as the schedule.
The second thing is per-location math. Homebase prices per location and puts HR and compliance in the top tier, which means a multi-store operator pays the top tier once per store whether or not each store needs all of it. Our workforce pricing is quoted per site and headcount — see pricing — with no tiers to climb and nothing held back as an upsell. Ask both of us for a number against your actual store count before you decide; that is the only comparison that matters.
The third is that we change the product for you. The payroll workbook exists because an owner's bookkeeper had a spreadsheet she had filled in by hand for years, and we built that sheet — column order, entity sections, the blank leave columns she wanted blank. The write-up drawer mirrors a photocopied form. That is not a feature list; it is how the work gets done. More at the workforce & store ops hub.
04 — The proof
Eight stores, 32 employees, one platform.
An eight-store retail shipping franchise with 32 employees runs on this. They came off a dedicated scheduling tool — their whole roster was imported from its export file — and what replaced it was not another scheduling tool.
It is a PIN time clock on each store's counter tablet, punch pairing that nets breaks and flags a missing out-punch, a multi-store rota you publish and employees confirm from their phones, a weekly timesheet export in the template their bookkeeper already used with rows split by the store the punch happened at, and a payroll workbook laid out per store LLC. Plus the counter work: quoting for custom boxing and freight with photos and a signature on the tablet, returns cartons scanned and exported, stamp inventory logged at open and close with margin visible to the owner only, handbook documents signed from a phone, and write-ups on their own form with a phone acknowledgement.
Eight stores, eight legal entities, one roster, one login. That is the case Homebase is not built for and we are.
05 — Questions
Straight answers.
Should a single-location shop just use Homebase?
Probably, yes. Homebase has a free plan for one location with up to ten employees covering basic scheduling, time tracking, messaging and hiring. We do not have a free plan and we do not have self-serve signup. If you are one store with a small team and the pain is only the schedule and the clock, take the free plan.
Do you run payroll like Homebase does?
No, and this is an important difference. Homebase sells payroll as an add-on that actually files and pays — a monthly base fee plus a per-employee-paid fee. We build the payroll workbook: a real spreadsheet with a section per store entity, hours and overtime pulled from punches, leave columns, loans, mileage and deductions, with changed rows highlighted. You or your bookkeeper run pay from it. If you want software that files your taxes, Homebase's payroll is the right tool.
How does per-location pricing compare?
Homebase publishes per-location plans — Basic free, then Essentials, Plus and All-in-One at increasing monthly prices per location, about 20 percent cheaper billed annually. The HR and compliance tooling sits in the top tier, so a multi-store operator pays the top tier times the number of stores. Eco Systems workforce pricing is quoted per site and headcount rather than published, but there are no feature tiers — nothing is locked behind an upgrade. Ask on the pricing page.
What does Eco Systems do that Homebase does not?
The parts of a store that are not workforce management. Counter quoting with photos and a customer signature on the tablet, returns cartons with barcode scanning and export, stamp inventory logs with owner-only margin, recurring site inspections, write-ups laid out like your own paper form, and on retail tenants the loyalty program, SMS marketing and check-in kiosk. Homebase is a workforce and HR product and stays in that lane.
06 — Next step
Count your stores, then compare numbers.
Twenty minutes: the rota, the PIN clock, a real payroll workbook, the counter quoting — and an honest answer, including "stay on Homebase" when that's the answer.
